I’m not exactly sure when my obsession with seagulls began, but I’m certain that living on an island brought me even closer to these birds.

There’s so much hate towards them, they eat rubbish, they’re loud, they steal food…but the truth is, they’re really important to the ecosystem. And in Irish folklore, they’re said to be weather prophets, which I actually believe, because whenever there’s a lot of intense movement from them in the sky, the weather always seems to change, a storm comes, or it suddenly gets colder.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just my mind being way too influenced by watching The Lighthouse and seeing all the chaos that followed after Robert Pattinson killed the one-eyed seagull, even after Dafoe warned him that killing a seagull brings bad luck.

The fact is, one of the lovely surprises we had when we moved into this apartment was discovering that every summer, seagulls build their nests on top of our building. I decided to photograph the whole process because there’s something so beautiful about it, the two gulls building their nest together, and then one of them staying there almost all the time, waiting for the babies to hatch.

And somewhere along the way, I discovered that among these birds, it’s actually quite normal for two females to do this together, which makes it even more special knowing that there are lesbian seagull couples out there.

But coming back to the cycle of life: as the chicks grow, which happens incredibly fast, the parents (or mums) begin sharing the work of caring for them, bringing them food, and keeping them safe.

Until one day, the nest is empty again, because these new little lives have flown somewhere else.

I can say with absolute certainty that all those moments spent watching and photographing them helped me through a period of deep sadness. Watching these birds I love being born so close to me helped me feel alive. They brought me comfort in loneliness and a little bit of joy to my days.

Life is beautiful when we listen to nature and to our hearts 💙🌊

Eu não sei ao certo quando começou minha obsessão com os seagulls, mas tenho certeza que morar em uma ilha me aproximou ainda mais desses pássaros.

Tem um hate enorme em relação à eles, comem lixo, são escandalosos, ladrões de comida… mas a verdade é que eles são muito importantes para o ecossistema. E no Irish Folklore, são profetas do tempo, o que eu acredito porque sempre que tem uma movimentação muito intensa deles no céu, o clima sempre muda, tem tempestade ou fica frio. 

Sei lá se é só minha cabeça muito impressionada por ter assistido The Lighthouse e visto todo o caos que gerou o Robert Pattinson matando o seagull de um olho mesmo depois do Dafoe avisar ele que matar seagull traz má sorte. 

Fato é que, essa foi uma das surpresas boas que tive quando mudamos pra esse ap: descobrir que todo verão os seagulls constroem ninho no topo desse prédio. Eu decidi fotografar todo esse processo que é tão bonito, dos dois gulls construindo o ninho e um deles ali o tempo todo esperando os bebês nascerem. E no meio disso, descobri que entre esses pássaros, é super normal que duas fêmeas façam isso juntas, o que deixa ainda mais especial saber que tem casal de seagull lésbicas.

Mas voltando aqui ao ciclo da vida, conforme eles vão crescendo que é bem rápido, os pais (mães) vão dividindo o trabalho de cuidado, trazer comida e proteger os filhotes. 

Até que em algum momento o ninho fica vazio de novo, porque essas novas vidas voaram para outro lugar.

Posso dizer com toda certeza que esses momentos observando e fotografando, mesmo vivendo em um período de muita tristeza, assistir esses pássaros que eu amo nascer assim tão de pertinho, me ajudou a sentir viva, ter aconchego na solidão e alegrar meus dias.

A vida é bonita quando ouvimos a natureza e nosso coração 💙🌊
